Why Holistic Therapy for Animal Companions?
The public is becoming more informed and
accepting of the wide range of Holistic approaches to health promotion and prevention, symptom management and treatment of
illness or injury in their own lives. We are now beginning to also see this interest extend to the pet members of the
family. Many animal guardians select Holistic approaches alone for some issues while seeking to incorporate Holistic
approaches with more traditional veterinary management of many other types of issues.
I have always had an intense love and
respect for our animal brethren and have been an animal guardian within my own family for many years, so the extension of
my work into the animal arena was a natural progression. My own belief about the Spirit of animals is shared by many,
if not most, animal guardians, and that is: Our beloved animal companions have exquisite, wonderful Spirits.
They are so intuitive and aware, so unconditionally loving, playful, supportive, nurturing, inquisitive and playful.
Given this, I so readily recognize that an animal's Spirit can be just as wounded and hurt just as much as that of their human
companions by change/stress in their lives, or by illness/injury.
Most of my work with animals involves the use of
Reiki or Energy Medicine (please see my Services page for a full description of Reiki therapy.) There is such a wide
spread application of Reiki in a pet's life. Here are some examples where Reiki could be extremely beneficial in facilitating
health and well-being for the animal members of one's family.
Competition, performance and working animals are perfect candidates
for Reiki Energy Work. The performance circuit can be very demanding physically and emotionally on an animal as
can the daily schedule of the working animal. Reiki therapy can be incorporated as part of a preventive program
in these animals to reduce stress, enhance mobility, improve performance and reduce discomfort in the highly active animal.
Reiki Therapy can be highly beneficial
for animals experiencing a high degree of change and/or stress in their home environments. Animals are extremely
sensitive to changes in their environments and their family structure. They are affected much more than we
often realize by dramatic changes in the lives of their human family members, even changes that are "positive" ones.
Changes where animal guardians might want to consider Reiki include things like a new baby, moving to a new home, "leaving"
of a family member (either a human member of the family or an animal sibling) through death, separation, going to
school. extended travel, etc.
Problem animal behaviors, even those without an identifiable "trigger" are often
very responsive to Reiki Therapy.
Benefits from Reiki Therapy in animals is much the same as in human clients:
~Balancing
of the body's energy fields.
~Improved circulation and movement.
~Reduction in pain or discomfort in both acute
and chronic illness/injury or following surgery.
~Strengthened immune system.
~Enhancement and support of the
body's natural ability to heal itself.
~Reduction or elimination of behavioral symptoms in the animal.
